Parade of Teams and Legion State Tournament Update

Cherryville, NC (WNN) – Nothing beats a Friday afternoon parade combined with baseball and celebrating champions. That is what Cherryville had this past Friday, July 19, 2024, a “Parade of Players.” The NC American Legion State Senior Boys Baseball Championship runs from July 20th through the 24th in Cherryville.ย
The 5 PM parade down Main Street consisted of firetrucks from surrounding towns and local American Legion dignitaries. Each firetruck hosted one of the eight teams playing in the tournament. With all the firetrucks in line, it had to be one of the loudest on record, with sirens blaring. The players were all smiling, waving, and having a great time atop each fire engine as onlookers waved back.
The Grand Marshal for the parade was Dalton Pence, a recent Major League Baseball draftee for the Texas Rangers. Pence was born and raised in Cherryville, so it was only fitting that he lead the parade.ร
Teams won a trip to the State playoffs in Cherryville by playing well in their respective area by winning or placing second.
Games continue today at Buck Fraley Field, July 23, with Games at 1PM and 4PM. The 1PM game will be Shelby Post 82 vs. Wilmington Post 10, and the 4PM Game will feature Wayne County Post 11 vs. Garner Post 232. Wayne County is the only undefeated team thus far in the double-elimination tournament. Games were moved up today due to possible inclement weather later in the day and tonight.ร
The host team Cherryville Post 100, Hamlet Post 49, High Point Post 87, and Union County Post 535, were eliminated from the tournament.
The Championship Games(s) are tomorrow at Fraley Field in Cherryville on July 24th, scheduled for 4PM and 7PM (if required). Of course, all times are tentative due to the weather.
Location: Buck Fraley Field, 401 E First St, Cherryville, NC 28021
