Lethal Amounts of Potential Fentanyl Found in Cherryville

CHERRYVILLE, NC (WNN) – The Cherryville Police Department was asked to assist the Division of Community Supervision (DCS) in a drug bust. Officers responded to the call at 5:29 p.m., on January 22, 2024.ย
DCS is the state-run department responsible for probation, parole and post-release supervision for offenders.
Officers were called to 216 Putnam Street, a residence in Cherryville. According to a press release from Brandon Hunsucker, the Chief of Police, drugs were found in the home.
“A plastic bag was discovered that contained 98 grams of suspected fentanyl.” stated Hunsucker in the press release.ย
Four people were arrested: Daniel Knighten, David Abernathy, Tina Lee Ann McCumbee and William Ellis. Knighten faced possession charges for fentanyl, Ellis and McCumbee were arrested for resisting arrest, and Abernathy for possessing a stolen vehicle.
WNN staff reports that all charges are allegations. Individuals arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
