BELMONT, NC (WNN) – Piedmont Lithium has received approval for its mining permit for the Carolina Lithium project in Gaston County, North Carolina. Piedmont submitted the permit for approval on August 30, 2021.

According to a press release from Piedmont Lithium, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Energy, Mineral, and Land Resources (D.E.M.L.R) granted the approval after reviewing Piedmont’s application.

“I would like to thank the leadership and staff at NCDEQ and DEMLR for their diligence in the process, as well as the members of our team who worked rigorously for more than two and a half years to ensure that every aspect of the Project met the state’s high standards for approval,” said Keith Philips, the CEO of Piedmont.

The Carolina Lithium project, located within the Carolina Tin-Spodumene Belt, aims to become a fully integrated mining and manufacturing operation for spodumene concentrate and lithium hydroxide.

Piedmont’s property spans approximately 1,500 acres and sits on the outskirts of Cherryville. Within the site, there will be facilities for the mine, the spodumene concentrate production plant, and the lithium hydroxide conversion plant.

Although the mining permit has been approved, Piedmont still has to secure all required construction permits, rezoning approvals and project financing activities before commencing construction.

“We look forward to continued engagement with the local community and the Gaston County Board of Commissioners. We have had extensive and ongoing dialogue with possible funding sources for Carolina Lithium, including the U.S. Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office,” said Philips.

The next step for Piedmont Lithium is to receive approval to rezone from the Gaston County Board Commissioners.

Correction from May 7, 2024: Changed the headline to clarify that the permit had not been granted, it had been approved. The permit was officially granted on May 7, 2024, but Piedmont learned they would receive the permit on April 15.
