Four Officers Fatally Shot in Charlotte, N.C., Altercation

CHARLOTTE, NC (WNN) – Eight law enforcement officers were shot after attempting to serve a warrant to a male subject in east Charlotte on Monday, April 29, 2024. Four officers were fatally shot and four others were wounded.ย
The Charlotte shooting occurred around 1:30 p.m. while the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force was conducting an investigation in the North Tryon Division at a home in the 5000 block of Galway Drive.
The wounded officers were transported to regional hospitals for treatment. A U.S. Marshal, two Adult Correctional Facility officers and a CMPD officer were killed.
The correction officers, Sam Poloche and Alden Elliot were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Officerย Joshua Eyer of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) reportedly fought for hours before succumbing to his wounds.
Poloche and Elliot were task force officers. The U.S. Marshals offer several task force initiatives across the country, where various law enforcement agencies work with the U.S. Marshals to conduct investigations.
The officers approached the residence to serve the warrant and the male suspect opened fire. Officers returned fire and fatally shot the suspect, Terry Clark Hughes, Jr., from Lincoln County. He was wanted for possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of felony flee to elude.
Two occupants remained in the residence. The CMPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team negotiated with the individuals to come out peacefully. Two women left the residence and were taken to the Law Enforcement Center for questioning by detectives.
The two occupants have not been named as suspects. However, CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings said in a press conference that shots were fired from inside the residence when officers approached the suspect.
According to a statement from the Gaston County Board of Commissioners (GCBC), Gaston County stands with Mecklenburg County. The board’s chairman, Chad Brown, expressed his condolences to the officersรขโฌโข families.ย
“This tragedy transcends political affiliations. Now is the time to set aside our differences and focus on the physical and mental health well-being of those who protect and serve our communities,” said Brown.
At least 13 law enforcement agencies responded, including CMPD, the U.S. Marshal’s Office and the N.C. State Highway Patrol.ย
The CMPD Homicide Unit will investigate this incident. Additionally, CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct aรย separate investigation regarding the deaths of the officers.
Update from Tuesday, April 30, 2024, 12:00 p.m.: The fourth officer was identified as Thomas M. Weeks. He was a Deputy Marshal in Charlotte.
