HIGH SHOALS, NC (WNN) – An incident unfolded, releasing almost 500 gallons of cooking oil near the Lincoln-Gaston County line. The spill occurred early Monday morning on March 4, 2024.ย
The spill impacted multiple Gaston County roads. According to an email from Adam Gaub, the director of communications for Gaston County, the spill started at Gaston Webb Chapel Road.
“The spill started at Gaston Webbs Chapel Road and Landers Chapel Road and stopped at the Quik Trip at US 321 and North Chester St for a total of 12 miles of roadway affected by the oil leak,” stated Gaub.
A cleanup crew has been actively working since 3:30 a.m., as per a press release from Gaston County Office of Emergency Management and Fire Services.
Other witness accounts have the spill spreading on secondary roads such as Landers Chapel Rd in the High Shoals area.
All affected areas have been covered by sand. Emergency Management and Fire Services Director Scott Hunter cautioned drives to be careful in all affected areas.
“This type of clean up isn’t like diesel fuel where it will eventually evaporate,” Hunter said, “We’re asking residents using this road to be aware that the road will be slick and any rapid acceleration or deceleration may result in a vehicle fishtailing.”ย
The North Gaston Fire Department, Dallas Fire Department, Gastonia Fire Department, Gaston County Police Department, NC Department of Transportation and clean up companies all responded to the incident.
The spill was allegedly caused by a truck with Fluid Technology, Inc. Gaub said cleanup efforts should be completed by midday tomorrow (March 5, 2024).
