1945 Shelby Post 82 Champion Honored: Living Legend Loy Paige
By: Roger Sigmon – Wise News Network
Shelby, NC (WNN) On Monday evening, August 19th, 2024, during a break between the American Legion World Series semifinal games, Loy Paige, one of the two remaining 1945 Shelby Post 82 ALWS Champions members, was honored. The 96-year-old former left fielder, a local legend in Shelby, was driven from first base to home plate and back on a golf cart while the announcer read some of his accolades. Despite losing some of the lightning speed he once possessed, Paige still exudes energy and enthusiasm.
Mr. Paige was a star player on a team that won Shelby’s first and only ALWS championship. He was a speedy outfielder and a strong hitter for Post 82. Paige batted .437 during the championship series. The team he played for was exceptional and played at a crucial time in US history. Japan surrendered to end WWII during the game, securing the regional championship in Sumter, SC. The game was interrupted by raucous cheering and applause as news spread of the end of the war. The team finished with a record of 33-6, including 15 straight victories to end the season. They remained undefeated with 3-0 records in each championship series, including the regional in Sumter, SC, sectionals in Charleston, SC, and the ALWS in Charlotte, NC. The final game was a 4-2 win over Trenton, NJ.
As he spotted me, he proudly displayed the glove he used during that magical season. The former left fielder graciously allowed me to ask a few questions and take a quick photo. His face lit up with a broad smile when I asked what playing American Legion baseball meant to him. He replied, “It was wonderful; it means everything to me. It allowed me to play professional baseball. I played on some semi-pro teams.” When asked about the lessons American Legion baseball offers or teaches kids, he was quick to respond, Discipline, it gets you through life. His words echoed the profound impact of the sport on young athletes, instilling values that go beyond the field.
As he settled into his seat to watch the game, I thanked him for his time, and he reciprocated with gratitude for my interest. It was indeed an honor to meet this pleasant and gracious gentleman. Mr. Loy Paige stands as a living testament to the proud tradition of this American Legion organization. His recognition celebrates the joy and excitement he and his teammates brought to a small North Carolina town during a dark historical period. The 1945 team’s accomplishment was a beacon of hope and distraction from the turmoil in the world, a reminder of the resilience and spirit of the community.
