Waco, NC (WNN) - On Saturday, March 7, 2026, city officials, first responders, and local citizens gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony of the new Waco Volunteer Fire Department Emergency Medical Services and Cleveland County Sheriff's Office Satellite Base.

A New Facility

The facility will be located just off Highway 150 near the Foothills Public Shooting Complex. The project aims to improve emergency response times and enhance public safety in the surrounding area. The location will also serve as the first community satellite station for the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office.

"Volunteers and Visionaries"

County leaders emphasize that the new EMS base will provide better working conditions for the first responders. Cleveland County Board of Commissioners Chairman Kevin Gordon noted that paramedics spend nearly 1/3 of their lives inside these facilities, highlighting the importance of creating spaces that support their quality of life while on duty.

The Waco Community Volunteer Fire Department is currently located at 421 S Main Street. According to department President Marvin Hutchinson, the department has more than 30 volunteer firefighters. Hutchinson, who has been involved with the department since 1977, reflected on its history and the people who helped shape it. He described the department as built by both "volunteers and visionaries": those who dedicate their time to serving the community, and the local leaders whose foresight helped grow and strengthen the department for future generations.
