Cherryville, NC (WNN) - On October 17, 2025, Downtown Cherryville turned into a spooky wonderland full of costumes, pumpkins, and eerie decorations. Many came together to enjoy the town's yearly Halloween bash, having a blast while getting spooked at the same time.
As visitors walked down Main Street, they could see spooky decorations around almost every corner. From creepy clowns to skeletons, these festive displays brought the Halloween spirit to life. There were also many dressed in costumes, from a unicorn to a jellyfish, and even a wendigo, a creature from folklore known for its eerie, ghostly look. Visitors had very creative costumes.
City of Cherryville Event Coordinator Emily Dellinger said this year's Scaryville offered more excitement than ever before.
"This year at Scaryville, we have a lot of new things going on," Dellinger said. "We have more vendors than in the past, including food trucks and craft booths. There's a band starting at seven o'clock—Off the Record, a totally '80s tribute—and a costume contest with cash prizes for winners in categories like people's choice, best group, and best kid costume."
She added that visitors could also enjoy a haunted hayride featuring "special spooky characters," along with inflatables, games, and plenty of fun for kids. With so many activities happening, visitors found no shortage of ways to celebrate Halloween downtown.
The hayride included a ride around the Larry & Carolyn Summer Recreation Center. Cherryville Little Theatre's JR Board members dressed up as scare actors, scaring those who rode the hayride. To many, this was a surprise as the actors swarmed them from all sides, yelling, screaming, and poking fun at them. At the end of the attraction, the actor playing Pennywise the clown chased those who rode the hayride, scaring children and adults at the same time.
Leading up to the costume contest, we interviewed several creative contenders. Those include Elizabeth Osborne, who dressed up as "Ghost Rider". When asked why she dressed up for Scaryville, her response was, "I dressed up for the kids."
We met Paisley Hamrick, who was dressed as a nurse. When speaking with her about her costume, she said she was inspired because her mom is a nurse and she wanted to be like her mom.
We also interviewed a family who dressed as a mouse trap. This was their first year at Scaryville, and their creative idea behind the costume came from TikTok. One of their children is 2 years old, the other is a few months old. The woman dressed as a black cat, the man dressed as an exterminator, and their children dressed as a mouse and a piece of cheese.
Another interesting costume we came across was Shogun Cosplayer Michael Yarbro. When asked about his costume, he mentioned that it was meticulously handmade and had taken him 10 years to put together. He further said he was heavily influenced by Japanese Culture through films and other media. This is something he has been passionate about, and he showed out. He was recognized as one of the top 5 in this year's costume contest.
This year's annual costume contest was a success. It was hard to choose a favorite from the many amazing costumes that graced the stage. It ultimately came down to three winners.
Elizabeth Osborne won first place and received $500 for her appearance as "Ghost Rider." With flaming orange hair and a flaming Huffy bicycle. Second place went to Tessa Goodman as the Greek Gorgon "Medusa." Goodman was given $250. Lastly, in third place was Deacon Young, who dressed as "Head in a Jar." He won $100.
As the night came to an end, Scaryville once again proved to be a community favorite. With its mix of spooky fun, creative costumes, and family-friendly activities, the event brought everyone together to celebrate the Halloween spirit in style.
