Cherryville, NC (WNN) - The Tryon Resolves Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has set out to support America, local tradition, and our high schoolers in one swoop! Their fundraiser is selling shirts to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary in a uniquely Cherryville way.
Millicent Heavner, the Regent of the society, spoke with us on how these cherry-themed celebratory shirts came to be. After deliberation between a committee of patriotic community members and ChatGPT, this spin on the America 250 logo was formed. Once the committee had agreed, the design was sent to Rhonda Travis, a graphic designer, who prepared it for printing. Once it was ready, David Hendrick at Print It LCC in Cherryville began work on the shirts. They have had several runs now, and the deadline for the last order is approaching!
Perhaps more important than the deadline is what the Tryon Resolves Chapter of NSDAR plans to do with this money. Heavner is proud of her “small but mighty” chapter's idea to resume their DAR Good Citizens award. This scholarship had been suspended due to a lack of a sustained fundraising source; however, with the success of these shirts, it will resume. This scholarship is open to high schools, which may nominate one student per year for excellence in dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism. In addition to scholarship funds, students will receive the Good Citizen Pin and a certificate and, if chosen, may advance to the state, division, or national levels of this award. Heavner mentioned, “This felt like a great opportunity to show our town pride while also supporting our local high school students as well.”
The shirts will only be available for preorder until June 11, 2026. The shirts are $25 for a youth small through adult extra large, and $30 for all sizes above that. The shirts can be ordered by visiting the dedicated Cherryville 250 Shirt Sales Facebook Page here. Shirts will be available before Cherryville’s 250th celebration on July 2, 2026. Heavner says the best way to contact her about a shirt is to leave a comment on the page or direct message her on Facebook. She also mentioned some shirts may be available in limited numbers at the 250th celebration on July 2nd.
