Cherryville, NC (WNN) - The Chavis Wolverines are taking a bite out of the competition, as they are currently 5-0 and undefeated at midseason. Thus far, these girls have been knocking it out of the park in three key areas: hitting, pitching, and defense. Through the first five games of the season, they outscored their opponents 61-1; one of those games was a 7-0 forfeit. The Wolverines cannot relax; there are still four regular-season games left, and W.C. Friday Middle School is hot on their heels. The Cavaliers are having a tremendous season as well; they are 4-0 and have outscored their opponents 61-19. The two teams are on a collision course scheduled for September 17 when they will meet head-to-head in Cherryville. If the two teams continue on their current trajectories, this matchup could very well determine the regular-season title and number-one seed heading into the Gaston County Championship.
The Wolverines have been putting up plenty of runs; however, they have been getting a stellar performance from Joselyn Poston in the pitcher’s circle and from the defense as well. Poston has pitched 2 no-hitters and 4 shutouts, with 37 strikeouts over 5 games. Combine that performance with double-digit runs per game, and it’s understandable why this team is currently undefeated and in first place.
Joselyn Poston began the season with a great performance from the circle, pitching a no-hit shutout, while striking out 8 batters. Top offensive performances came from Lydia Williams with 3 hits, 1 RBI, Sophia Willis with 3 hits, 2 RBIs, Brynlee Capps with 2 hits, 2 RBIs, Harper Lovelace with 2 hits, 1 RBI, Emma Pruitt with 1 hit, 2 RBIs, and Savannah Woods with 1 hit and 3 RBIs.
Joselyn Poston pitched her second no-hit shutout while striking out 7 in 3 innings of play. The offense was led by Lydia Williams, 3 hits, 1 RBI; Sopha Willis, 3 hits, 3 RBIs; Hailey Canipe, 3 hits, 1 RBI; Joselyn Poston, 2 hits, 4 RBIs; Brynlee Capps, 2 hits; Harper Lovelace, 1 hit, 3 RBIs; and Emma Pruitt, 1 hit, 2 RBIs.
A forfeit by rule is recorded as a 7-0 victory. Typically, one run is granted per scheduled inning of regulation play.
Joselyn Poston gave up her only run of the season but still struck out 11 batters in 5 innings. The hits were distributed among Hailey Canipe 3 hits, 4 RBIs, Lydia Williams 2 hits, 2 RBIs, Emma Pruitt 2 hits, 1 RBI, Joselyn Poston 2 hits, Brynlee Capps 1 hit, 1 RBI, Harper Lovelace 1 hit, 2 RBIs, Sophia Willis 1 hit, 2 RBIs, and Emma Blake 1 hit, 1 RBI.
Joselyn Poston once again pitched a 5-inning shutout as she struck out 11 Bessemer City batters. She helped her own cause at the plate with 3 hits and knocked in 2 RBIs. Also contributing to the scoring were Brynlee Capps with 2 hits, 2 RBIs; Savannah Woods with 1 hit, 2 RBIs; Emma Pruitt with 1 hit, 1 RBI; Harper Lovelace with 1 hit, 1 RBI; and Emma Blake, along with Lydia Williams, each added 1 hit.
Only four regular-season games remain for the Wolverines. They have an open date, then resume play to conclude the season.
