Cherryville, NC (WNN) - The Cherryville Lady Ironmen and Ironmen track teams participated in the 2A West Regionals against 18 other teams on May 8th at Montreat College. The men’s team finished 7th, and the women’s team placed 10th. There were 20 members representing Cherryville High School against the best competitors in the region. Unlike most track meets, this meet had a cap of 4 members per school per event, and entries were seeded based on qualifying times or distances. Automatic state bids were secured by 11 members across 5 events based on their performance at the regional meet.
The Lady Ironmen had 2 relay teams qualify: the 4x100 Meter Relay team, consisting of Cici Sloan, Ella Blake, Annica Johnson, and Makayla Hicks. The other qualifier was the 4x200 Meter Relay team, consisting of Ella Blake, Annica Johnson, Cici Sloan, and Cameryn Bell. The Ironmen had 2 relay teams and 1 individual field event qualifier. Narian Hopper will participate in the high jump, and the following relay teams will go to the state championships: 4x100 Meter Relay team consisting of Enijahe Whitworth, Jackson Heavner, Darius Pullen, and Yovanny Gomez, and the 4x200 Meter Relay team consisting of Caleb Gomez, Enijahe Whitworth, Jackson Heavner, and Darius Pullen. These student athletes will compete next May 13th in Greensboro, NC, as they vie for a state championship. Coaches Callie Cooke and Matt Strother have helped to bring out the best in their teams and are proud of what has been accomplished thus far this season.
