Posted

Cherryville, NC (WNN) - Tennis: The Ironmen concluded a great regular season last week and were off from competing this week as they prepared for the upcoming postseason. Coach Brandon Shull said that, as far as his research shows and from talking with others who have followed CHS tennis over the years, it appears this year’s team was easily one of the most successful in school history. The Ironmen finished the regular season in second place in the Southern Piedmont 2A/3A/4A conference with a record of 6-1 and 10-2 overall. They finished behind first-place Highland Tech (7-0 and 11-1) and ahead of third-place Stuart W. Cramer (5-2 and 10-4).

The postseason begins on April 29 with the dual-team playoffs. Cherryville will host Christ the King on that day at the Donna Lavery Tennis Courts. It is possible the Ironmen could host more than one round if they advance. Their outstanding play also earned them a spot in the 1A/2A Western Regional Tournament, to be held in Elkin, NC, on May 1. All six of the starting lineup earned their way into the tournament. Cole Kelly and Trevor McSwain will be playing in singles matches. The other four will play on two doubles teams. Steven Bell and Gage Johnson will be one team, and the other will be comprised of Hunter Griffin and Gabriel Stergiou.

Soccer: The week started rough for the Lady Ironmen, who lost two matches to extend their streak to 5 losses. By the end of the week, things had turned around, and they began a winning streak. Three matches are remaining in the regular season. The next will be on April 27 at home against Hunter Huss, and this will also be senior recognition night. The Lady Ironmen travel to Gastonia to play Ashbrook on April 30, and then the regular season finale will be at Bessemer City on May 1.
