Ironmen Teams Continue in Playoffs, Competitions and Showcases

Posted

Cherryville, NC (WNN) - It's been a busy time for Cherryville High School teams, as some compete in the NCHSAA State Playoffs, while others participate in competitions and showcases. As the holidays quickly approach, Fall sports are winding down, Winter teams are practicing, and others with multiple seasons are in transition. These are exciting times with so many teams having successful seasons and postseasons. No matter how far they have or will advance in the playoffs, all teams have shown Ironmen pride throughout the season.

Cheer Team: The CHS Cheer Team continued their winning season on November 1st as they competed at the UCA Piedmont Regional competition held at Cox Mill High School. This young team is very talented and is having great success.

This competition was no exception as they took home first place in the small varsity game day division. This was the second straight first-place finish in this category. They were also able to secure 2nd place in the small varsity traditional division. These girls also currently perform during football games and will be cheering at basketball games beginning later this month.

These young ladies are extremely busy and continue to improve as they are also preparing for their next competition, which is the NCHSAA Invitational State Championship on December 6th, held at the Raleigh Convention Center.

Marching Band: What a fantastic season the Marching Ironmen have had. The band members began working in July to perfect their show, and their marching competition season ended this past Saturday, November 1st, as they performed in the Gaston County Marching Band Fanfare at Stuart W. Cramer.

This event is a showcase for all the bands in the county and is always a much-anticipated performance. This season was historic for the Cherryville High School Band. Overall, 1st place was captured in three out of four competitions. Multiple 1st place overall awards have not happened since the 2017 season.

The band earned 14 awards throughout the season, including placement in percussion, color guard, drum major, music, general effect, and visual effect. Before the concert band season begins, the students will continue to play halftime for the football playoffs.

Director Cole Crawford is excited when he discusses the success of the marching band. He stated, "I am very proud of their work, as this is a very young group and can only improve from here. The kids have had a fun time this season, and we look forward to our concert band season this coming Winter and Spring."

Cross Country: On Halloween, October 31st, two members of the Cherryville men's cross-country team competed in the NCHSAA State Championship meet at Ivey Redmon Sports Complex in Kernersville, NC. There was no team score due to only two members qualifying for the meet. The two CHS runners performed well on the big stage.

Steven Wyatt finished in 28th place overall in a time of 18:04.26, and Geovanny Martinez's time of 20:17.85 placed him 116th. The men's and women's teams both had excellent seasons, and with only a few runners graduating, they should be a strong force to be reckoned with again next season.

Men's Soccer: The men's Ironmen soccer team competed in the first round of the NCHSAA State Playoffs on November 4th at Starmount High School in Boonville, NC. The Rams of Starmount jumped out to an early lead and, unfortunately, ended the Ironmen's season. Out of Cherryville's 17 goals this season, 12 were scored by Cole Kelly, who is also the place kicker for the Ironmen football team.
