Gastonia, NC (WNN) - On May 18 and 19, the Gaston County United Way will distribute more than 800 care packages to senior citizens throughout the Gaston County community as part of its annual Senior Spring Clean program.

Now in its third year, the Senior Spring Clean initiative was created to support local seniors living on fixed incomes by providing essential household and hygiene items that many struggle to afford as everyday costs continue to rise. Care packages include high-demand necessities such as laundry detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, body soap, and other hygiene products that help seniors maintain dignity, cleanliness, and stability in their daily lives.

“This program reflects our commitment to care for and uplift every generation in our community — from the youngest citizen to the oldest,” said Andrea Stephens, President of the Gaston County United Way. “Particularly during a time when the cost of living continues to increase, it is important that we support our senior neighbors.”

Due to the growing demand for assistance across Gaston County, the United Way expanded the program beyond its original 600-package goal this year to serve more than 800 seniors.

The success of the program would not be possible without the support of community partners including City Church, The Pointe Church, Food Lion, and more than 20 volunteers who united to serve the community.

As an added support this year, Food Lion provided 400 bags of groceries to accompany the Senior Spring Clean care packages.

The Gaston County United Way continues to focus on bringing people and resources together so that everyone in the community can thrive.
