Gastonia, NC (WNN)- Both Cherryville Ironmen men’s and women’s cross-country teams had great showings at the Gaston County Championship meets on Tuesday, October 7th, 2025. Forestview High School in Gastonia, NC, hosted the meets. Even though Cherryville High School is the second smallest of the 10 county schools, these two teams showed that good things can come in small packages. The schools represented cover five classifications, with the largest being 6A Ashbrook High School of Gastonia, NC. Overall, the men finished in second place, and the ladies achieved a strong fourth-place finish.
The dynamic coaching duo of CHS alumni Antonio Griggs (class of 2006) and Callie Cooke (class of 2007) took over cross-country coaching duties last season. They have made quite the turnaround in only two seasons. The program has not only grown in the number of participants but has also quickly become a force to be reckoned with in the county and at the conference. Coach Griggs and Coach Cooke both said, “We’re incredibly proud of the effort, teamwork, and determination our runners have shown all season long.”
Top finishers for the women’s team were freshman Clara Skamarock in 12th with a time of 26:01.07 and senior Cameryn Bell in 15th with a time of 26:18.33. The team had 109 points and placed 4th overall behind Forestview, South Point, and Highland Tech. In the men’s division, the scores for the top four schools were Forestview 35, Cherryville 58, South Point 98, and Stuart Cramer 122. The top four male finishers for Cherryville were senior Steven Wyatt, who placed 2nd with a time of 19:08.11, sophomore Geovanny Martinez, who placed 5th at 20:17.72, sophomore Seth Lockler, whose time of 20:58.51 was good for 12th place, and sophomore Mason Powers, who clocked in at 21:31.70 to place 16th.
Congratulations to all these fine young men and women on such a strong performance in the Gaston County meet. The two teams will next be in action on Tuesday, October 14th, in Shelby, NC, for the Southern Piedmont 2A/3A/4A Conference Championships. We look forward to another strong showing from these teams. There are quite a few underclassmen on both teams, so there should be some quality teams for the next several seasons.
