This year, your Cherryville High marching band started strong at the Enka, Land Of The Sky competition. CHS won 3rd place percussion, 1st place guard, 1st place music, and 1st place overall in class 1A. The last time the CHS Marching Band won Class 1A overall was in 2017, with the “Fire and Ice” show. The Cherryville marching band has worked all summer to perfect their show as much as possible and try to have the best season they can.
Some of the bands that CHS competed with were East Henderson, Robbinsville, and Smoky Mountain. The band came in 5th overall for classes 1/A-2/A out of twelve bands, which is a great achievement. CHS band director, Cole Crawford, hopes that we will only get better from here. He says, “The band did a great job representing Cherryville High School at their most recent competition, Enka Land of the Sky. The students really went out on the field and did the best they could. They earned every bit of hardware that they received, which includes: 1st Place Music, 1st Place Colorguard, 3rd Place Percussion, and 1st Place Class 1A.” Therefore, with his pride in the band being evident, Crawford keeps pushing us strong.
At the Enka, Land Of The Sky competition, Cole Crawford talked about the band having done a great job and not to think of this as “We’re better than them and therefore, can stop trying so hard,” but instead, as “We went out and did well, but not our best, keep trying to be better and don’t let anyone stop us.” One of the main things that Crawford keeps saying every chance that he gets is “You’re biggest competition is yourself.” This highlights the importance of self-improvement and focusing on personal growth rather than comparing yourself to others. It also stresses that, as a group, we need to work as a team, not individuals; there’s no “I” in team! (and the “me” doesn’t count!)
With high hopes and a great spirit, the CHS marching band will continue to get better and try harder. Every rehearsal is a step closer to being the best we can be. On Tuesday, September 30th, when the band had its first rehearsal since Enka, Crawford said, “It is September 30th, we have until November 1st to clean the show and get better for Fanfare.” When the band goes to its next competition, it expects to have better scores than it did at Enka, and the one after that to be even better. Even each football game’s halftime show will be better than the last. Your Cherryville High marching band will continue to have a great season and hopefully be better every year.
