Cherryville, NC (WNN)- This week, we saw one new season begin with great success and another team’s historical season come to an end. Students at Cherryville High School have an array of extra-curricular activities from which to choose.
Each team seems to be achieving some level of success. This is due in part to the incredible coaches, assistants, and volunteers who are teaching these young student athletes how to succeed in life as well as during competitions.
We are beginning to transition from Fall sports to Winter sports, and if the upcoming season is anything like the one that is winding down, fans are in for a real treat throughout the rest of the school year.
The Cherryville High School cheer team began a successful competition season on Tuesday, October 21st at Davidson College. The site was the host for the Davidson Invitational presented by the Davidson College cheer program.
The team began the season by defeating Wheatmore High School in the game-day small varsity division. The first-place finish is a tremendous way to begin the season. You have seen these young ladies perform during home football games throughout the season; however, this was the first time many of them had been involved in a cheer competition. This is an extremely young team, consisting of only freshmen and sophomores.
The Cherryville cheer team is coached by Wendy Holt, Tammy Wilson, and Layn Treadway. They have seen their group grow tremendously throughout the season as they continue to prepare for the big stage of the NCHSAA State Championship on December 6th. Coach Holt said, “We will be working to bring home the program’s 33rd state title, but most of all, we are working to instill the work ethic and dedication that it takes to be successful. Tuesday night was a good start to hopefully a great season.”
Congratulations to these young ladies on a fabulous beginning to their competition season, and best wishes for continued success. Their hard work has been paying off not only during Friday nights when they entertain the football fans, but in competition as well. This team will be together for several more years, so there is potential for several successful future seasons as well.
All good things must come to an end, and Thursday, October 23rd, was the end to a historical season for the Lady Ironmen. What a magical season these young ladies were able to experience. Several school records were broken, Coach Kiser set a record for wins in Gaston County and for wins at a single school, and the team advanced to the third round of the NCHSAA playoffs.
This is the deepest the women’s volleyball team has advanced. Unfortunately, the magic ended in the third round. The Lady Ironmen traveled to Greensboro, NC, for the third round of the NCHSAA playoffs. Their opponent was the Cardinals of Cornerstone Charter Academy, who had gone undefeated in their conference and only lost four games all season. Cornerstone was ranked as the number two seed in the state. Although the Cherryville girls fought hard all night, they still fell three sets to 0.
The Cardinals came out fast and took an early lead of 7 points in the opening set. Cherryville battled back to close the margin to within 2 points. That would be as close as they would get as the Cardinals held on to win the set 25-17. The second set began much the same as the first, with Cornerstone racing out to a quick lead. They were clicking on all cylinders in this set, and even with some great play, the points just did not come for the Lady Ironmen. The set ended 25-7 in favor of the home team, the Cardinals.
Cherryville came out determined in the third set. The lead swung back and forth early, before Cornerstone found its groove. About midway through, they began to pull away, before finishing off the set 25-9. The night’s results were not what Cherryville had hoped for; however, this takes nothing away from an amazing season. This year’s team will be long remembered for all they accomplished. The players will also take with them some wonderful memories.
Some of those memories will be immortalized on the banners within the walls of Nixon Gym. Once new school records have been verified, we will publish those results. Congratulations, ladies, on your magical season, and best wishes for those who will continue into other sports during the year.
