Less than a week after Winter Storm Fern, another winter weather system is expected to impact North Carolina this weekend.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Cherryville/Piedmont area. This watch will be in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning. Precipitation is expected to begin early Saturday, around 4 am, continuing through the day with high wind speeds before tapering off into Saturday night.
Forecast models suggest that areas west of Charlotte could see lower snow totals than those east of the metropolitan area, such as the Carolina coast. With an 80% chance of snow, the Gaston County area could see 2-5 inches of snow throughout the day on Saturday.
As with most winter storms, this system is expected to create hazardous road conditions beginning Saturday and likely lingering into Monday.
As of 2:30 pm on Thursday, January 29, 2026, Governor Josh Stein declared a State of Emergency for North Carolina.
