Cherryville’s Mayor Beam Back at Helm, Vendor Questions Policy, Other Topics Discussed

CHERRYVILLE, NC (WNN) –  Cherryville City Council held its monthly meeting, beginning with a prayer from Gina Spiker, the children’s music minister at Mount Zion Baptist Church. Councilman Jon Abernethy followed with a special prayer for Kent Ballard, a city employee currently battling a severe illness.

Mayor’s Comments on Community Resilience

Mayor H.L. Beam addressed the council, providing updates and expressing pride in the community’s resilience in response to recent storms. He commended city employees and volunteers for their tireless efforts in cleaning up storm debris and improving the streets. The mayor also highlighted ongoing infrastructure projects, including repairs on Pink Street and the nearly completed gym construction. He announced the upcoming “Scary Ville” event, which is expected to draw over 6,000 attendees, showcasing Cherryville’s strong sense of community and tradition. It will occur Friday October 18th, 2024 from 6PM to 10PM.

IT Provider Change Raises Community Concerns

During the public comment period, local business owner John Rudasill raised concerns about the city’s recent decision to switch IT providers from his company, Phoenix Corporate Services, to Visual Edge IT, a Monroe-based firm per Rudasill’s statement. Rudasill questioned the decision-making process and emphasized his company’s 20-year service record with the city. City Manager Brian Dalton responded by highlighting the need to enhance cybersecurity and suggested a private meeting between him and Rudasill to discuss the issue further.

Celebrating Cherryville’s Student Athletes

The meeting recognized “Power Player” athletes who participated in Cherryville public school sports. Piedmont Lithium sponsors the Power Player of the Month award. Jared Varela and Cameryn Bell were the award recipients. Varela who is a multi- sport athlete currently plays Soccer at Cherryville High School and is the team captain. He was honored for his leadership and skill as a goalkeeper and midfielder. Bell, a Cherryville High School Cross Country Runner and Track Team member was also celebrated. This is her third year on the cross-country team, and she will be returning for her third year in track, where she typically competes in the 4×400 relay, 400m, and 800m events.

Bowers Receives Recognition

Council Reviews Financial Amendments and New Developments

City Manager Brian Dalton introduced budget amendments for council review and approval. They also discussed a resolution for the Local Water Supply Plan, Planning Director Richard Elam presented an annexation ordinance for a new Dollar Tree location at 2301 Lincolnton Hwy. Council approved the voluntary annexation request for Dollar Tree.
